Sterilization to Reduce euthanasia: Spay And Neuter

Various animals have been domesticated by man. Initially their purpose was either to be raised for food or to perform a job for humans. In today’s society technology has replaced many of the tasks these animals were once used for. Working animals can still be found however, the majority of animals, such as catsand dogs, are kept primarily as companions and household pets. The popularity of dogs and cats has ultimately led to an increasingly high pet population. Many pets are viewed as disposable and thrown to the streets or abandoned in shelters. Owners who do not spay or neutertheir pets contribute to the growth of the pet population which increases the number of animals in the already overcrowded shelter, which in the end leads to high levels of euthanasia.

Tips for a Female Dog in Heat

Female Dogs

Personality-wise there is really nothing different from a female dog and a male dog. You've got your dominant and aggressive female dogs just like you do males, and vice versa you've got your submissive and calm female dogs just like males. So when deciding if you want a male or female dog, your main concerns in terms of differences will typically be the dog's size, as females are generally smaller than males (not always but generally), and whether or not you want to get the female spayed.
Although, I personally think that unless you have the intent of breeding, you should get your dog spayed or neutered because it is overall healthier for the dog and you prevent unwanted pregnancies, but it is always up to you, the pet owner, as to what you want to do.
If you have decided upon a female dog, you'll probably want to brush up on some information about dogs coming into heat and what all a spay involves.

Spaying Your Female Dog

Female Dog Health

I love all dogs- male and female alike- but that doesn't mean that I want puppies. Now, generally when you adopt a dog from a shelter, the dog is already spayed or will be shortly after adoption. But you may still be iffy about the whole process.
The best thing that you can do to ease your insecurities is to make sure that you know everything you can about the full process of having a dog spayed.
It is actually one of the most important surgeries that you need to make sure that your female dog has because it will truly reduce the risk of breast cancer and it will 100% reduce the risk of an unwanted pregnancy.
Spaying your female dog is a routine procedure that your vet could probably do in his/her sleep, but to the average pet parent, it can be scary having their dog put under anesthesia. Below is the basic information that should hopefully help you ease any worries about having your precious pup spayed.

When to Spay a Female Dog

There are a lot of breeders who recommend that you wait until after the dog's first heat to get the dog spayed. This is because many people believe that a female dog is not fully done growing until she has her first heat, when she becomes an adult, so to speak, and by spaying too early, you prevent growth. Well, I'm not 100% on the accuracy of this; I believe that a dog will grow to its full potential no matter when you spay, but it's up to you whether you believe it or not.
